Collection description The images in this collection were collected over the long career of Irving Rehman, Ph.D., who taught anatomy as a faculty member at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine, at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, and at Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles where he last used the collection for residency training. The original collection consisted of 16,000 photographs and illustrations of human anatomy dissections maintained in 3-ring binders. Some of those images are 35 mm slides, and others are photographic plates printed on paper. Dr. Rehman photographed dissections of fresh cadavers while a former Deputy Coroner and Forensic Anatomist with the Los Angeles County Department of the Coroner. Since these dissections were performed on cadavers before embalming, the color is much more realistic than in a typical dissected image. During his years in San Diego, Dr. Rehman hired Helen Barker to draw anatomical illustrations, which are included in this collection. The images focus on anatomical areas of interest to an orthopaedic surgeon. Chadwick F. Smith, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon, collaborated with Dr. Rehman for many years in using these images for training materials for orthopaedic residents and others. Dr. Smith adds the orthopaedic surgeon perspective to the collection.

Dr. Rehman donated the collection to the USC Norris Medical Library in 2004 giving ownership to the university. In October 2004, Dr. Rehman undertook digitizing the images, first selecting the best examples for teaching purpose from his original work, and then color correcting the images as he digitized them using an iMac G5 with OSX and an Epson Perfection Scanner 2480 flatbed scanner with a plate for transparencies. Before his death in November 2006, at age 95, Dr. Rehman digitized 2,570 images of which 2,054 are included in the collection that is divided into three sub-collections.

Dissection Atlas of Orthopaedic Surgical Anatomy

The Dissection Atlas is the smallest sub-collection of the Orthopaedic Surgical Anatomy Teaching Collection. This collection corresponds to selected colored photographs from a two volume set used as learning materials for orthopaedic surgery residents and others. Images in this collection include labels identifying anatomical parts pointing to those significant structures within the images included in the Rehman Teaching Slide Library.

Rehman and Smith Color Atlas of Orthopaedic Surgical Anatomy

The Color Atlas is the second smallest sub-collection of the Orthopaedic Surgical Anatomy Teaching Collection. It includes colored illustrations drawn by Helen Barker of dissections with a focus on areas of interest to orthopaedics. This digital image collection corresponds to selected illustrations from a three volume set used as learning materials for orthopaedic surgery residents and others. Images in this collection are both unlabeled and labelled.

Rehman Teaching Slide Library

The largest collection contains photographic images without anatomical labels. These photographs also serve as the basis for the Dissection Atlas labeled images.
